Can Acne Ruin Your Social Life?

Acne is an infection of sebum producing glands, known as the sebaceous glands, present in our skin that leads to ugly eruptions that can ruin our social life. As we know, the skin is the largest organ of our body. It has numerous hair follicles that are connected to the sebaceous glands that produce sebum, an oily fluid. The basic purpose of sebum is to give a waterproof cover to our skin. At the same time, new skin cells are continuously produced that reach the surface of the skin and replace the old dead cells. When the openings of the sebaceous glands in the skin are blocked due to dead cells or other contaminants, sebum accumulates in the pores. Inflammation and bacterial infection of this collected sebum results in outbreaks of acne vulgaris. This condition can also be due to excessive production of sebum.

Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacteria implicated by causing acne. Acne can result in any part of the body, but are found more frequently on the face, back and chest. They become much more annoying when repeated infection of the blocked pore leads to the formation of ugly cysts that can leave behind an acne scar.

Common acne sprout vulgaris can result in low self esteem and shame and can ruin your social life. This is all the more so since the condition is more common in teenagers, where personal appearance matters a lot. Although it is found most often in teenagers, acne outbreaks can occur in any age group, even in small babies.

A variety of reasons have been implicated as the cause behind the outbreak of acne in a person, but the lack of personal hygiene that leads to dirty skin conditions is the most common. Repeated touching of the face, either habitual or due to a certain tension can result in the transfer of bacteria from the dirty hands to the face. An inadequate diet with unhealthy fat content and lack of exercise has also been believed to lead to acne outbreaks. Whatever the reason; a face plagued with acne certainly makes it an unsightly look and has the potential to ruin social life.

Medical Treatment for Acne

There are several medical treatments available for acne. The key is to be patient while putting them into practice since most of them begin their action after two to eight weeks.

The most commonly used medical treatment for acne is acne lotions containing retinoic acid and adapalene. They are extracts of vitamin A and are believed to decrease the amount of sebum production. They significantly reduce the severity of acne breakouts.

However, retinoic acid can cause mild to severe allergic reactions in people sensitive to it and should never be applied to open wounds or sunburned / burnt skin. The use of products containing retinoic acid is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Lighter side effects of retinoic acid are associated with burning and itching of the skin, lightening of the skin in the treated area, flaking, redness, an unusually warm sensation and unusual dryness. More severe retinoic acid side effects are related to darkening of the treated area, allergic reactions, skin rashes, trouble breathing, tightness in the chest, hives and swelling in the mouth, tongue and lips.

If these acne lotions containing retinoic acid and adapalene do not elicit the desired effect or they can not use because of any medical condition (sensitivity, pregnancy, etc.), then you may opt for antibiotics like tetracycline. They damage the P. acnes bacteria and prevent their subsequent replication. But antibiotics can result in dry skin prone to sunburn. Therefore always use tandem sunscreens with antibiotics.

Salicylic acid is a commonly used keratolytic agent that helps shed off the layer of dead cells that block pores. It also makes the skin more susceptible to harmful UV rays as a side effect. One of the reasons why acne is more common in adolescents is the high level of hormones like androgens and testosterone that stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce sebum.

The FDA has approved oral contraceptive pills containing estrogen and progesterone as a medical treatment for acne. These hormones reduce the production of sebum and therefore decrease the incidence of acne formation. However birth pills have their own side effects and therefore their use as an acne treatment should be a well thought out decision.

If the treatments mentioned above are not very effective, then cleansers, creams and lotions containing benzoyl peroxide may be used as the active ingredient. The latter is especially useful in killing Propionibacterium acnes. The dryness of the skin associated with its use can be counteracted by using a good moisturizer. Laser is another form of medical treatment used against acne, in which the sebaceous glands that produce sebum are thermally damaged without producing any visible effect on the skin.

Thus, we see that there are many proven remedies to combat acne. We have to choose the one that is right for us and then lead a normal life without being embarrassed by its ungainly appearance.
