Types of Eczema - Atopic Contact Seborrheic Dyshidrotic and Stasis Dermatitis

Eczema is a generalized term for skin conditions that are categorized as chronic or recurring. There are five common types of eczema; atopic, contact, dyshidrotic, seborrheic and stasis. These are common because they are the most occurring and these can influence the development of other types. The other types of eczema are hand, occupational, neuro and nummular dermatitis. The five common types usually appear first and the causes of which are family history of the disorder, genetic defect or mutation, abnormal immune system response and other existing medical conditions.

Types of Eczema - Atopic Contact Seborrheic Dyshidrotic and Stasis Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis – It is the most common of all types of eczema, also called the “itch that rash”. The appearance can be red, dry, scaly or cracking for some but can also blister like with clear liquid oozing out of the red rashes. This is caused by atopic conditions inherited from parents, gene defects, environmental conditions such as sudden changes in the weather and abnormal response of the immune system. The dermatitis affects infants, young children to adults. A person with this type of eczema; the chances of it developing into other atopic conditions such as asthma or hay fever is from 50% to 66%; this is called atopic march.

Contact Dermatitis – When the skin is exposed to certain matter, everyday objects and foods results to an abnormal reaction of the body’s immune system; 2 kinds of contact eczema, allergic and irritant. Allergic is an instant reaction to an allergen exposure, example is allergy to the metal nickel. Irritant is constant or continuous contact with substances that damages the skin before it can repair itself. Common allergens are topical antibacterial creams; chemical compounds in clothes and shoes such as dyes, leather, rubber, glue or adhesives; concrete; fragrances in perfumes, cosmetics and skin care products; metals: nickel, mercury, gold and cobalt; rubber accelerators in mouse pad and gym equipments; and plants like poison oak, ivy or sumac. Allergic dermatitis appears as itchy, bumpy, swollen, dry patch and red skin. Severe cases of reaction may develop blisters, flaky or cracked skin. Common irritants are detergents, water, oils, paints and varnish, food and metal works fluids.

Seborrheic Dermatitis – This type of eczema is also called cradle cap and dandruff, usually found on the scalp but can also appear on mouth creases, eyelids and eyebrows, buttocks to lower back and groin. It has an oily, waxy appearance developing to flaking and scaling skin with color white or yellowish brown. As it progresses, it turns red and swollen patch like in atopic or psoriasis. Constant itchiness and burning sensation is felt when infected. This is caused by cold dry weather, oily hair or skin, exhaustion, obesity, yeasts proliferation on the skin, existing medical conditions and males are more vulnerable to it.

There are various types of eczema some with complex causes and may be harder to identify but for others it’s as simple as avoiding certain foods or objects.

There are types of eczema that results from pre-existing medical or skin conditions. Two of these types are dyshidrotic and stasis dermatitis. These may result from other dermatitis or medical conditions such as infections, metal implants, injuries and poor circulation. Sometimes it’s mandatory to cure the pre-existing ailment before the skin ailment can be cleared. The following are the description of the skin disorders:

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis – It is also called hand or vesicular eczema; this skin disorder appears on the hands and soles of feet. Dyshidrotic looks like tapioca pudding, small blistering rashes with inflamed, reddish skin that is hot to the touch. Affected areas tend to sweat excessively. When it is infected, the blisters ooze and turn to crusty skin. When the dermatitis is severe, the skin crack and peel significantly. The causes of dyshidrotic are stress; pre-existing atopic conditions, contact dermatitis and infection on other parts of the body; metal implants like hip implants; aspirin and oral contraceptives; and smoking. Bacterial or fungal infection at other parts of the body causes auto-eczematization and when the infection is cleared, the dermatitis will begin to heal. Sometimes it can clear on its own in two to three weeks, depending on mildness of the condition, but it can also be disabling that it would be painful to work or do daily activities.

Stasis Dermatitis – Stasis is also known as gravitational eczema, it appears as painful inflammation with the skin thinning and discolored. It is caused by poor circulation; on exceptional circumstances can it occur before the age of 40. Poor blood circulation results the building up of fluids and the legs swell. This build up of fluids will eventually affect the skin, develops painful and itchy sores and the skin will thin out and discoloration occurs; violet lesions on lower leg and top of feet. When infection happens the skin will have yellowish brown crusting. Medical conditions that may result to poor circulation include deep vein thrombosis, obesity, high blood pressure, kidney failure and surgery or injuries that damaged the veins; old age is also a factor of poor circulation.

Other types of eczema also result from the ones discussed in this article, notable are occupational and hand dermatitis. Occupational dermatitis is caused by irritation from exposure to chemical substances, natural or synthetic; previous atopic conditions or allergies. It is categorized as a different type although causes are the same; affliction has a connection to work activities and exposure to elements involving occupation. Hand dermatitis is affliction of dermatitis to the hands which causes include dyshidrotic; a manifestation of atopic dermatitis after dormancy for years; and contact dermatitis.
